This is where our terrible adventure started late on Saturday night, June 16th. Joyce got the worst phone call of her life around 4:00 pm. Barry's adventure actually started around 2:00 pm that afternoon when his head collided with concrete after a fall from his bike onto the steps below at the campus of the University of Colorado in Boulder.
Joyce and I were on a plane by 8:30 pm and arrived in Boulder around 1:30 am Saturday night. Wayne, Tikie, Colby and Courtney were camping in Sequoia and were out of phone contact until Sunday afternoon. They also were on a plane by late Sunday afternoon and arrived in Boulder around midnight. Bryan and Quemoc travelled 21 hours by car and arrived in Boulder from Southern California late Sunday afternoon.
Barry went through two operations on Saturday night, one before we got on the plane and one while we were in flight. Joyce was in contact with the neurosurgeon after the first surgery which included removing a blood clot and a portion of his skull to allow the brain to swell. She was in contact with Jeremy, one of Barry's roommates and who was at the hospital during the night, before our flight and after we landed. Being in contact with someone at the hospital until we arrived was necessary for our sanity. The second surgery was a result of another CAT scan that showed a blood clot in the back of the head and some blood in the brain. Both surgeries went fine. And now the waiting began.
WEEK ONE
These are some of the pictures of Barry in the Intensive Care Unit. He laid in a bed with tubes down his throat and monitors all over his body. He was put into an induced coma to minimize his brain activity and to allow his brain to go through a period of 3-4 days of maximum swelling. And the rest of the week, he was on a paralytic to keep him asleep and again to minimize his activity to allow the swelling to go down.

The many machines that are monitoring Barry and keeping him alive

The family and friends vigil began in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) waiting room
The family in the pictures include Joyce, Wayne and Tikie, Colby and Courtney and Bryan. Besides the family, the pictures include various friends. The friends in order across the top are: Mari and Nate in picture 1; Dre, Chris and Ralph in picture 2; and Colly, Effie and Jeremy in picture 3. Adam in picture 4; Victoria, Chris and Jackie in picture 5; and Victoria, Chris and Jackie in picture 6. Chris, Jeremy and Adam are Barry's roommates. Effie and Jackie are Jeremy and Chris' girlfriends and Colly and Victoria are Chris' mother and aunt.
A considerable amount of time was spent waiting the outcome of Barry's fate and though people normally smile for the camera, we had to find some time for hope and laughter
And there is a lot of support in Barry's ICU room
Quickly, sitting inside a hospital waiting room got old and we all moved our vigil to an area outside the hospital.
This was the prime activity for each member of the family. We were all keeping friends and other members of the family updated as well as taking care of some business matters - ALL LONG DISTANCE
